Rag Quilt FAQs

How much shrinkage occurs after the first wash?

Some shrinkage is normal with a rag quilt, especially when flannel or cotton fabrics are used. The first wash typically creates the most noticeable change as the fabric softens and the exposed seams begin to fray. Because fabric types can shrink differently, slight variations in the finished size are part of the handmade nature of each quilt.

Do the frayed edges shed lint excessively?

You may notice some lint and loose threads during the first few washes as the clipped seams develop their signature soft, frayed texture. This is normal for a rag quilt and should decrease significantly after the initial washes. We recommend cleaning your dryer's lint trap during and after drying, particularly the first few times the quilt is washed.

Are the seams durable for regular daily use?

Yes. Rag quilts are designed so the frayed edges are decorative while the main stitching keeps the quilt securely assembled. With normal care, the seams are made to hold up to regular use and washing. The exposed edges may continue to soften and become more textured over time without compromising the quilt's construction.
